ShadowsScotch on the Socks - The Shadows

Theories regarding instrumentals: Sometimes it's better just to say nothing, Like if you're ever tempted to mention how it taking more muscles to frown then you burn up calories eating celery...

Anyway, here's a stellar fuzzed-up, Link Wray-style track from the Shads. Forget Cliff, forget the sketch witth Syd Little, forget your Dad buying 20 Golden Greats (as advertised on TV) from a petrol station and being carsick to Hank twanging the theme from the bleedin' Deer Hunter.

In 2000 Hank Marvin released 'Marvin at the Movies', a collection of guitar instrumental versions of movie themes, including Pearl Bailey's The Best of Friends from Disney's The Fox and the Hound... or I could have dreamt that.

Apparently there are more calories in a M&S chicken and avocado salad sandwich than in a Big Mac...

Dug dugs It's Over - Dug Dugs

ˇAh! ˇRasca! Vamos... ˇBaila! A touch of evil from los Dug Dugs, hirsute giants of South American rock from Tijuana.

In 1967 Los Dug Dugs appeared in two movies: El Mundo Loco De Los Jovenes (The Crazy World of the Teenagers) and Angel O Demonio aka Cinco De Chocolate Y Una De Fresa (Angel or Devil - Five of Chocolate & One of Strawberry), a socialist polemic about working on the pick 'n' mix counter at Wooworths Los Cabos.

Dug Dugs were involved in a classic manufactured pop rivalry with another Mexican band, Los Ovnis. Dug Dugs started it by saying of their rivals "They are so lousy! Los Ovnis should sell tamales, instead of being ridiculous singers", who then replied with "Their most popular song is 'La Ultima Vez', which is horrible. They are so bad that we, playing our worst song ('Hanky Panky') sound better than them playing their best." Bless.

Manifesto & Book News

If it's ever been on K-Tel or Ronco, it's in. If it features hand claps, cow bells, syrupy orchestration, walls of sound, wrecking crews, sha-la-las, toothy teen idols, candy-based metaphors for carnal acts or lyrics about hugging, squeezing and rocking all night long, it's in.
