Senor CoconutSmoke on the Water - Senor Coconut

Cha-cha-cha with this Latin version of the stodgy Deep Purple song.

Smoke On the Water was written about a hotel fire that started when Deep Purple were in Montreaux competing for TV's Golden Rose award with their Sunday Night Variety show.

They had to console themselves with the Silver Rose, losing the main prize to ITV's Gary Wilmot impression show Copy Cats. The odds were stacked when you consider the Swis and their love of sketch comedy.

The time Deep Purple spent in Switzerland recording their Machine Head album was packed full of strange rock 'n' roll incidents, from the flare-gum blaze at the casino to the x-rated party piece that mirrored Led Zeppelin's groupie and red snapper incident.

With a 200g Toblerone rather than a fish.

Gore Gore Girls I'm Gonna Get You Yet - The Gore Gore Girls

Badass all-girl garage rockers from Detroit kidnap and brainwash bubblegum girl group pop. Imagine Patty Hearst on lead, rhythm, bass and drums with those trigger-happy Symbionese Liberation Army goons on back-up vox, low-slung machine guns and military-issue berets.

The Gore Gore Girls take their name from a Herschell Gordon Lewis splatter film about a maniac with a grudge against strippers....

It's like Michael Powell's Peeping Tom, only with more flesh and flabby strippers and none of that stuff about the camera as phallus, photography as violation, film as ritualized voyeurism, and all that film school 'morbid gaze' jive. Just more blood and strippers.

After making over thirty exploitation films in the sixties, Lewis returned to film in 2002 with Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat.

Manifesto & Book News

If it's ever been on K-Tel or Ronco, it's in. If it features hand claps, cow bells, syrupy orchestration, walls of sound, wrecking crews, sha-la-las, toothy teen idols, candy-based metaphors for carnal acts or lyrics about hugging, squeezing and rocking all night long, it's in.

Do you know who I am?
