Let's split Black music into 2 eras: Billy Ocean and post-Billy Ocean.

In the Billy era - before Hip-Hop misogyny - smooth soul was standard. When courting a lady, stars like Ralph Tresvant, Peabo Bryson and Color Me Badd (though not the white one with the beard) would take her to a top Bistro in Detroit, Philly or LA, wouldn't flinch when she ordered a pricy starter and pay for a cab back to his place before 'Sexing her up'. Yes, these were black male stars who genuinely enjoyed the company of women.

Billy Ocean once worked for Ford in Dagenham... I'd like to see Ice Cube or Kool Moe Dee stamp grilles out of slanted sheet metal for the Cortina MkIV.

C30 C60 C90 Go! - Bow Wow Wow

I always hated the DIY punk ethic - to me it translated to vinyl as amateurish and shambolic and, let's face it, those are the same sort of results achieved by TVAM producers in 1988 when they hired Jimmy Greaves as their TV critic (and Greavesie was never credited with any cultural paradigm shifts, was he?)

Having said that, this is ace - a thrashy 3 minute ode to the pleasures of home taping.

Home taping: "Legally it's theft, though not, I think, morally." ... I have used that opinion in dinner party conversation many times, always managing to keep a straight face. And now you may use it too.
