The heyday of the rock opera coincided with that of the trashy rock novel. My favourite charity shop rock book is Bradley Denton's Wrack And Roll, an alternate history epic where Britain and China are at war with the US and the bastard child of rock megastar Bitch Alice, together with her band the Wrackers, attempt to precipitate Armageddon by destroying the US space programme.

Most Americans believed it. I left it on the tube. The cover depressed me.

Airhead - Thomas Dolby

Yes, Thomas, women are airheads... and yet you are so clever. Your synth is shaped like a guitar so you can sling it round your neck and strut about the stage playing your pasty-faced, misogynistic novelty electro pop.

For a period in the mid eighties (it was sometime between French Kissing in the U.S.A and Police Academy 3; I don't know for sure) Thomas Dolby was huge. He was a quirky, colourful, up-to-the-minute, high tech pop distraction. He was like musical Teletext. If you pressed the Reveal button he'd give you the punchline to a joke and the latest score between Plymouth Argyle and Peterborough Utd.

No, Mum, he doesn't 'make the tea as well?' Why do you ask if every piece of new technology 'makes the tea as well?'
