Os MutantesBat Macumba - Os Mutantes

Spastic, twisted and psychedelic beats. Sex, love and magic.

Brazil in 1966 and Os Mutantes operate as the musical wing of the leftist Tropicalia movement made up of poets, writers, visual artists, architects and composers.

In 1968 the Brazilian military government passed AI5 - Acto Instution #5, temporarily ending free speech in the Brazilian media. As a result, prominent Tropicalia members Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso were arrested, interrogated, shaved and exiled to England...

Maybe we could have done an exchange with Emerson, Lake and Palmer or the infant Mick Hucknall.

Jayne Mansfield Warm Leather-ette - The Normal

Check out this car crash classic and cut 80s synth pop casualties the Normal free from the twisted wreckage of the inferior Grace Jones cover version.

Psychologists believe that the pain, physical displacement and mental trauma experienced by car crash victims during and after impact are often superseded by the acute social embarrassment the victim feels having placed themselves in such a situation; the humiliation of public injury often overrides the injury itself...

An experience not unlike going to one of those club nights where stupid people pretend they're at a school disco. Frankly, I'd rather lose six pints of blood.

Manifesto & Book News

If it's ever been on K-Tel or Ronco, it's in. If it features hand claps, cow bells, syrupy orchestration, walls of sound, wrecking crews, sha-la-las, toothy teen idols, candy-based metaphors for carnal acts or lyrics about hugging, squeezing and rocking all night long, it's in.
